Apparel Technique and Construction: Intermediate Sewing- #101010

Intermediate sewing introduces the student to advanced techniques in garment construction. Projects are selected by the student and developed under the guidance of the instructor.  Provides students with practical skills that can be applied to both home sewing and the garment industry.  Topics covered include:  zippers, buttonholes, fitting, pattern drafting and copying garments to a pattern.  A certificate of completion will be granted to students who have fulfilled class requirements.

A study of period costume, it’s relationship the political and social conditions of the times, solution from related arts, and influence on modern dress. Designed for students of fashion, theater arts, and merchandising.

Textbook required.

This is a 3 unit class in the Family and Consumer Science Department for students pursuing an AA degree in Fashion Studies at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Class is open to anyone interested in the subject matter.

Beginning sewing will introduce the student to the techniques and principles for making woven garments with a single needle machine. Choose from 3 beginner projects. Students will also learn to use a serger which is a garment industry fundamental tool. Certificate of completion is provided for students preparing for sewing /creating in the workplace.

Class fee includes the pattern, fabric, notions and supplies needed to complete the project in class. You will need to bring your own sewing machine -AND- a denim needle… which we sell here.

*You have the option to upgrade to leather handles for an additional $15.00. We will have them available in class, so you can decide at that time.

We will be making the Denver Tote designed by Sotak.

Feel free to stop by in the week prior to class to pick out your fabric. Though sufficient time is allotted for choosing your fabric at the beginning of class too.

*You have the option to upgrade to leather handles for an additional $15.00. We will have them available in class, so you can decide at that time.

We will be making the Wool+Wax Tote designed by Noodlehead. 
Finished Dimensions: 13” W, 15” H, 3” deep

Feel free to stop by any time prior to class to pick out your fabric. Though choosing it at the beginning of class is fine too.

Frustrated with zippers? 4 basic zipper installations will be taught: slot, invisible, lapped and fly.  Each student will be supplied with appropriate zippers to practice multiple samples.
